Holiday Meal for 8 under $20 {Giveaway} sponsored by Walmart

20 November 2009 29 Comments Disclosure

Walmart has recently teamed up with some of Food Networks stars Melissa D’Arabian from Ten Dollar Dinners and Aaron Sanchez of Chefs vs. City to create tasty twists on traditional holiday dishes. And this holiday season, Walmart is reducing prices on key holiday meal items to help make holiday meals a little more affordable.

Walmart’s Holiday Meal Idea:

the following meal idea was provided with permission by Walmart

A turkey dinner for eight as low as $20

According to a survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation, last year’s average cost of a turkey was roughly $1.19 per pound. Select Grade A turkeys are available now for 40 cents per pound at Walmart.* These gobblers are part of Walmart’s $20 Thanksgiving menu guaranteeing family favorites will be on the dinner table this holiday season. Walmart’s $20 Thanksgiving feast includes:

One 12-pound Grade A turkey*
Three 11 to 15.5-ounce cans Green Giant vegetables
Two 14-ounce cans Ocean Spray cranberry sauce
Three 6-ounce boxes of Stove Top stuffing
One 5-pound bag of red potatoes
One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls
One 22-ounce pumpkin roll cake

*Prices and availability may vary in AK, HI, OK, NM, WI and at Walmart.com. Prices on select Grade A turkeys begin November 4; limit two turkeys per customer; weights and brands vary by store. Quantities are limited; no rain checks. All prices do not include tax.

My Budget Friendly Holiday Meal Idea:

Walmart recently supplied me with a giftcard to see if I could make my own holiday meal on the cheap. Prior to being asked to participate in this I had already purchased most of my holiday meal items. I would like to share with you what I would do for a budget friendly holiday meal:

To start things off it would be to find the perfect turkey. When it comes to cooking turkey I must admit that I am very hesitant to do it all “from scratch”. Me, I’m more of a turkey cook when all the hard work has been done for me. I personally love these Jennie O’s Oven Ready Whole Turkey’s because they come pre-seasoned and ready for the oven. I’ve used this type of turkey for years and it always seems to be a hit at my holiday dinners. They can be a bit expensive though but with the help of turkey breast options and discounted sales you can get one of these at a good price. For example I saw a whole bird (Jennie O’s Oven Ready) just the other day for half price. I don’t know why it was marked down but I’m glad I decided to dig around in the cooler to find the best price. So what I’ve learned from that experience is don’t just pick the first one off of the top, meat is priced by the lb. so search around a bit to find the lowest price available.

With the turkey I would serve green bean casserole which takes only a couple cans of green beans, french onions, and cream of mushroom soup. An easy and delicious staple for our holidays around at the Diva household.

The turkey that I picked actually comes with its own gravy but we need something to serve that gravy with, right? Homemade mashed potatoes are SO easy, we never buy the box. Cook peeled, cubed russet potatoes until fork tender. Drain and Cream potatoes with a little butter and milk with an electric handmixer (its easier than using a potatoe masher in my opinion). Easy delicious whipped potatoes for turkey and gravy.

I’m drooling just writing my budget holiday meal plan but we are not done yet. Of course we will have a can of jellied cranberry sauce per hubby’s request, he loves the stuff. And for dessert I would go with Krusteaz: Pecan Bars Supreme Mix. You might have seen me tweeting about eating Pecan Bars this past week, well these are the pecan bars that I was talking about. They are SO good, our family loves them. Very easy to make and easier since all the ingredients are in one box. And for the bread of the meal we often choose Sister Schubert’s: Dinner 10 ct. yeast rolls.

Best idea for saving money on the holidays is to stock up when items are on sale. For example, baking goods are on sale now so I am buying for the whole holiday season (e.g. chocolate chips, sugar, condensed milk). Also there is a shortage of pumpkin so buy now

We plan ahead and make everything from scratch, saves us from running out of something at the last minute and needing to buy for convenience. Plus it is yummy :)

I think using coupons are a great way to save money when combined with sales. For example, both Butterball and Honeysuckle White have printable coupons for their respective turkey brands.

I’ve been saving money by combining sales (like 45 cent cans of veggies) with coupons (1.00 off 8) to stock up on winter staples that can also be dressed up for holiday meals. Corn with fresh herbs anyone? Green beans almondine?

Watch for sales and use coupons. Smart shoppers plan ahead and buy early. I got my name brand veggies for 16 cents a can a few weeks back. My flour, yeast, & sugar were free. Happy Thanksgiving.

I save money on holiday meals by making a lot of things from scratch — particularly casseroles and desserts. Pre-made desserts can be so pricey! Take a pumpkin pie, for example… $5 at my grocery store. Are you kidding me? I have all of the ingredients on hand except for the pumpkin, which is usually less than $2. Poof, there you have it, a glorious and delicious homemade pumpkin pie.

I’m also big on reducing the portions I make, especially since we’re not big on leftovers!

For the holidays, I purchase a bigger turkey than I need for the four of us dining together. I use the leftovers to make turkey sandwiches and turkey potpies. Then I use the carcass to make a great turkey soup. I usually get 3-4 meals from one turkey. I also buy cranberry sauce, veggies, etc. when they are on sale before the holidays to save even more money.

I compare prices in the weekly ads and then buy all the stuff I need on sale several weeks before the holidays.

Like alot of others, I shop ahead, follow the ads, and ALWAYS use coupons. No trip to the grocery store is complete unless I can hand over a pile of coupons!
Another way we save for Thanksgiving is we all have certain things we bring to the meal. We celebrate at my parent’s house so I bring a few things & my brother brings things so that way none of use are breaking the bank to have a great meal.

  • Courtney said:

I work the night before Thanksgiving, so to save time I make as many dishes ahead of time as I can, then just reheat them on Thanksgiving day. You can even make mashed potatoes ahead of time!

I love Walmart! It is the best place for saving money and finding everything you need under one store roof!

I tend to be pretty cheap…..so…..I bargain hunt through the sales ads to find the best deals.
I also make a lot of my own foods (not much processed or premade food). This can be very costly…eating premade stuff.

I’ll be sticking to a shopping list too!

No matter how much money you have, doing a potluck dinner with family really works. The person having the dinner usealy has the meat and everyone else has a specific item they have to bring. This only works if you have a reliable family though lol :)

I save money on Holiday meals by always buying store brand when I can. Whether on veggies, stuffing, canned soups for different things, bread, you name it, it takes the same and it’s so much cheaper.

First, I try to match my coupons to sale items. Secondly, I stick to the list! Third, I buy in bulk when things go on sale so that I only have to restock certain foods every 3-4 months. As items went on sale before Thanksgiving we stocked up so that come Christmas we won’t need anymore major food items.

  • Ashley B. said:

I try to stock up well before the holidays on anything non-perishable. I watch for sales and of course use coupons, so that by the time Nov/Dec roll around I am already stocked up on my of my holiday supplies!

Instead of spending the entire day Christmas in the kitchen, I start cooking 2 days before! Green beans and other items that can be reheated in a short amount of time. Then on Christmas, I only have to put the meat into the oven and take it out!

Not only does clipping coupons and shopping for sales help, but inviting additional guests and creating a pot-luck helps lighten the load. I find myself much less frenzied when I’m able to designate dishes for others to bring and I only have to make the turkey and mashed potatoes.

I wish I had gone to Walmart for our Holiday dinner. We couldn’t afford a Thanksgiving dinner this year, so we had to go to a family members house. It was hard for my mom since she has ALWAYS done thanksgiving dinner for over 20 years. I never thought of Walmart being a great place to shop for good price Thanksgiving trimmings. :)

I agree about coupons. Clipping coupons is one of my favorite things to do and does help greatly and significantly reduce the prices of groceries. Also looking online at various coupons sites, manufacturers sites, etc… can help as well!
