Themed Family Game Night with Walmart

23 September 2009 33 Comments Disclosure

Dinosaur Themed Family Game NightAs being a part of Walmart’s Elevenmoms, we were recently approached to see if we could come up with our themed family game night. The idea behind the themed family game night is to have a family fun-filled night with movies, games, and favorite foods. The cost of taking a family to the movies can really add up so doing something at home is a great way to not only save money but also enjoy doing something together.

Now until September 30th, Walmart is focusing on Family Game Night. For the longest time we have had “movie night at home” in order to save our family money. With Family Game Night you take it a step further by creating a themed night of games, movies, and food.

With the giftcard that Walmart sent us, our family created our themed family game night around DINOSAURS! Ever since the Doughnuts & Dinosaurs event in Atlanta that my family and I attended a few weeks back, the kidlets have been absolutely crazy over dinos. So it was only fitting that we tried to mimic the whole dinosaur experience.

To start off we snagged the movie Dinosaur and some fun shaped chicken nuggets by Tyson (they were shaped like dinosaurs, how appropriate for our theme). The game we chose to play as a family was Twister because we figured the kids could pretend to be dinosaurs towering over the colorful dots.

Our family game night was a huge success. I liked the idea of adding a game to our movie nights. The best part was that the whole night cost less than $40, the game and the movie alone was only about $25….try taking the whole family to the movies for that price. And the plus side is that the movie and games can be used over and over again which you definitely can not do going out to the movies.

I think we’d enjoy a Twilight game night, where we could watch the movie and play the board game (though we currently don’t own either one). I have no clue what we’d eat though!

Hi! Our boys would also love a Dino night. We might also do a Human Body experience for Halloween. Serve spaghetti with meatballs (brains and eyeballs). Our game would also be Twister (to move the whole body) or HyperDash, and our movie would be a Magic School Bus movie (probably the blood cells one). How fun!!

Our Family Game night is with Life Twists and Turns. Any age above 4 years old can play. It’s an awesome game and you can do so much with it and decide how long you want to play. We do a fondue with it and you can get up in between years and get a little snack/treat, because we always have some sort of fondue going (cheese/chocolate, etc)

We love singing, so our game night would include singing on the Wii with Singit Disney in an ‘American Idol’ judged event, followed by watching either High School Musical, Camp Rock or Jonus 3-D. We would have probably have a variety of pizza and coke for dinner.

We love doing game nights! Such a fun idea! One thing we’ve never done that would be cool would be to have a card game night. We could set up a card table, and play all kinds of card games, including poker with pennies. I bet the kids would love that!

Twilight game night sounds like it would be a huge hit as well. I take it you have a lot of Twilight fans in your house :) Perhaps for snacks you could do a lot of red colored foods like apples, pizza, red velvet cake? Just an idea. Good luck!

Alyssa and Ryan are really into cars right now, so I’m thinking that we would have a cars-themed nights! I’m thinking the Disney movie Cars, some large chicken breasts that my husband and I could cut into the shape of trucks and cars, served up with tater tots (we could say they’re wheels?), maybe some type of matching or memory game, and car-decorated cupcakes for dessert!

  • Debbie said:

My kids are really into transformers right now so I think I would buy some pizza and popcorn juice and have the transformers movie and maybe some transformers puzzle that all the kids can build

    I tweeted this contest.

I would love to do a family game night on a regular basis. With four boys ranging from 2 to 13 it is getting harder with everyones activities. I would love to do a Survivor Theme game night. We could do puzzles and trivia for the challenges. Make snacks like pudding with “worms” and “ants” on a log. We could also watch some Survivor on television. Having all boys they would really be excited to help plan and participate in this I’m sure !

My kids are all grown, but we still get together for game nights every now and then. My daughter has the Jumangi board game, so it would be fitting to have that as the theme. We could watch the movie, play the game, then have foods that relate to the different things that happened in the movie (melons and fruits from the “jungle” for example).

I think B and I would love to have a Family Game Night based around The Office. We’d play The Office board game, dress up like Pam + Jim, have jellybeans for snacks (Pam always has them on her desk) and also some pretzels (from an episode where they stand in line/fight over a pretzel). We could drink from coffee mugs & decorate with a few pencil bouquets around the house. How cute!

I think my super huge family would enjoy a Caribbean theme game night. We could show off our skills playing limbo and scattegories! Oh and of course we would serve Jamaican jerk chicken and drink pina coladas from cool coconut cups all while listening to the Reggae Music Channel. And best of all I would host this kind of party dead smack in the winter…it would be a break from the Michigan weather!

  • The Domestic Diva (author) said:

@Crystal, love it especially enjoying such an awesome Caribbean themed night in the dead of winter. Good luck!

  • The Domestic Diva (author) said:

@kay, sounds so fun. You could also watch the movie “Office Space” (a personal favorite of mine from the 90’s). Good luck!
